WHAT IS THE REASEARCHG PROJECT FOR TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD
In To Kill A Mockingbird many literary devices and elements are used. One of which is characterization. It is clearly identified when the author Harper Lee identifies the character Bob Ewell. She describes him as a cold hearted, racist man who discriminates against a black man Tom Robinson. She also includes an Antagonist, which is also Bob Ewell because he is a clear rival of Atticus who is one of the main characters. The literary element that is also used is foreshadowing. It is used with Boo Radley because Scout, Jem and Dill say much about him in the beginning of the novel, so you know he will appear later on. A fourth element in the novel in Symbolism. The main symbol in this entire book is a mockingbird. The mockingbird relates to Tom Robinson because Tom has not done anything wrong, but is charged for rape instead. All Tom ever did was help out. A mockingbird does nothing wrong, all it does is sing beautiful music, so it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.
There are many literary elements used in To Kill a Mockingbird. One literary element is the setting. An example of the setting from the novel is “Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square….” Another literary element used in To Kill a Mockingbird was characterization. The author used characterization to describe is atticus.
1- Characterization – Is what a Writer uses to identify what type of person someone is. It will describe how social, how intelligent and how emotional a character is or can be, and how he or she will react to certain events. This is shown in the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, when Atticus, an extremely honest and non-bias lawyer is asked to take a case involving an African American who has been accused of raping and beating a white woman. If this case had been presented to any other lawyer in his small town, it would have been rejected. Atticus being the fair man he is, accepted and despite the complete white and racist jury, he almost wins his case. This incident helps characterize Atticus.
2- Foreshadowing – Is what a writer uses to give hints to the reader about what might happen and what the outcome might be. In the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, a character named Boo Radley is said to be a “monster”, who only comes out at night and eats squirrels and cats. Towards the middle of the book, someone mysteriously leaves trinkets for two children, but it is hinted that the person is Boo. Events like this continue throughout the book and eventually, Boo is revealed to be a
Climax is a literary device used in To Kill a Mockingbird. When Boo Radley protects the children from Bob Ewell, That is the climax in the story. That is the highest action part of the book. You never really here about Boo Radley except for the rumors going around about him. This is the only part of the book where Boo Radley comes outside and people see him. That is why it is a major part of the book.
Setting is a literary device used in To Kill a Mockingbird. The setting of the novel is in Maycomb, Alabama, in the early 1930’s. This is a very important time because it is a time of prejudice and racism. Because of the time period, a man called Tom Robinson gets convicted of a crime that he did not commit.
Symbolism is a literary device used in To Kill a Mockingbird. This is an important device because Harper Lee uses a mockingbird to symbolize Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. Harper Lee uses the Mockingbird to symbolize Tom Robinson and Boo Radley because they are judged as awful people when they really aren’t.
Characterization is a literary device used in To Kill a Mockingbird. Boo Radley is portrayed as 6 and a half feet tall, eats raw squirrels and his eyes bug out of his head. They say that he eats what ever he can catch. “He dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained.”
Symbolism- A symbol in the novel is a mockingbird. The author describes a mocking bird as a bird that doesn’t do anything to anyone. All mockingbirds do is make music for the people to hear. A mockingbird is a symbol for Tom Robinson because Tom was a hard working man who didn’t do anything to anyone, except help those with the work that they asked him to do.
Setting- The setting of the book is in a southern town in Alabama.
Event- An event in the novel is racism. There is a lot of racism against the blacks and they were not treated fairly. Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell even though there was very clear evidence that he was innocent, but he was black and the jury was white and not a group of peers and they said he was guilty.
Imagery- When Jem is describing the way Boo looks: “Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained-if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scare that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time.”
1 Characterization- Atticus Finch is an old feeble man who knows right from wrong. Through out the story he teaches his children valuable things about life. On page 30 he tell Scot not to judge Walter by what he looks like. Climb into his skin and see how he feels when people judge him by the way he looks.
2 Symbolism- The mocking bird plays a big symbol part in the story. The mocking bird symbolizes peaceful, helpful, shy, gentle, and sensitive. The mocking bird relates too many of the character and the ways they act. Atticus believes that you shouldn’t kill a mocking bird because they didn’t do anything wrong to you and they shouldn’t be punish for something they did not do. Ex Tom Robison Page 90
3 Climax- The climax of the story is the case of Tom Robison. It shows how race pays a huge matter in the way a trial will go. He is proven guilty for something he did not do just goes of race and prejudice. All his innocents was pointed towards not being guilty but cause of his color he is proven to guilty of raping a young girl. Trial starts on Chapter 19.
4 Setting- The setting of the book is a small southern town of Maycomb. The population is mostly racist whites who believe they are better then all blacks. Everyone knows everyone and none business is ever kept secret.
The setting in to kill a mocking bird is important because it was a small town called Macomb, during the great depression and it was a very prejudice age. This leads to why tom Robinson loses his case although it was very believable.
Characterization when the author Harper Lee describes Bob Ewell as a racist, poor, uneducated man who is racist against tom Robinson.
Symbolism is used when Atticus says “ It’s a sin to kill a mocking bird”, The mocking bird symbolizes Tom Robinson a man who does nothing wrong but help a lady and gets shot down and gets put in jail.
Foreshadowing is used when tom goes into mayellas house with her because he was black and it wasn't really exepted back then.
I believe setting in To Kill a Mockingbird was important because it really shows what kind of society they live in. Macomb is a small, old town in which very little happens. When stuff in this town happens everybody knows about it. Like the scene where Atticus has to shoot the dog with rabies. It took him only one shot and everyone in town ended up knowing about it the next day.
Symbolism is used a lot in To Kill a Mockingbird Like the famous quote “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” In he story, Tom Robinson is the mockingbird in this story and by “killing him” it means put him in jail. Another mockingbird in the story is Boo Radley. Everyone thinks he is some insane person which is making his reputation bad even thought he doesn’t harm anyone but actually leaves gifts in a tree for Jem.
Characterization is also used in To Kill a Mockingbird like when Jem says that Boo Radley is a dangerous man who has bright yellow teeth scars and is just gruesome looking even though they really find out at the end of the book he is a kind sweet man with the gentlest eyes
Foreshadowing is used in the scene of To Kill a Mockingbird when everyone is in the courtroom and Atticus starts to build up evidence to prove that Tom Robinson is not guilty like when Mayella Ewell says “I don’t recon he hit me…I mean yes he hit me!” or also since she was beaten on her right side which means the person would have to use his left hand more but Tom’s left hand was torn in a cotton gin when he was twelve but bob Ewell is left handed. The jury ended up having tom guilty just to be killed later in the book and everyone finding out Bob Ewell was the one who beat Mayella.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, it demonstrates many different literary elements/devices. One literary element portrayed through out the book was symbolism. Symbolism is when any object represents more then it really is, when the object stands for a larger idea. In the book, Tom Robinson is symbolized as a mockingbird. A mockingbird is a bird that is thoughtful, kind, and most of all innocent. Tom is being convicted of a crime he had no part in. He was only doing the right thing by helping Mayella, and for that, he is considered the criminal. He was really the victim of the courtroom. Atticus once said, “But remember, it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (90) Tom was a mockingbird and was killed for being innocent.Another literary element is simile. A simile is comparing to unlike things using like or as. An example from the book was, "The tree was as healthy as Jem"(67) This is comparing a tree to the health of Jem. Another literary element was setting. A setting is the time and place. It can also add to the background and atmosphere. In the novel, the setting is Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930's. Like Andrew said, this was a time where there was still discrimination between the whites and the blacks. Tom Robinson was guilty because he was black, but if the setting took place in the 1990's he most probably would of been found innocent. The last literary element i will say is characterization. Characterization is how an author reveals a character, the author demonstrates this with Boo Radley because Jems tells a story about him saying, he is six and half foot tall by his prints, he dines on raw squirrels and he once stabs his father in the leg with a scissor. In the middle-end, we find out he is none of those things and he is really a thoughtful, caring and kind person. He is also a mockingbird.
• Characterization - In to Kill a Mocking the antagonist Bob Ewell because of all of the rotten things he’s down. For example, he can never hold onto his job. He smacks his daughter when he’s drunk. He lies about Tom Robinson raping his daughter under oath. Bob was trying to make it seem that it was no him who smacked around Mayella.
• Conflict - In the town of Mayocomb there is deep hate against African American. Many people in the town despised Tom Robinson. Before the trial when tom was in jail there was a mob outside the jail house. They were there to lynch Tom. This conflict was about Tom Robinson vs. Society.
• Epiphany - “One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Radley porch was enough.” Scout. Scout now knows how life was like Boo Radly. Boo has always been a significant part of the book, so everything about boo can be put aside.
• Exposition – “Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square. Somehow it was hotter then: a black dog suffered on a summer’s day; bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square.” A example of an exposition.
Many literary elements are used in To Kill a Mockingbird. One of the literary elements used is characterization. Characterization is when a writer slowly reveals the personality of a character. Harper Lee uses this because she slowly reveals the character of Boo Radly by showing small things that he does to help people out. In the scene when miss Maudie’s house burns down scout is cold so boo puts a blanket around her. Also everyday after school boo left something in a hole in the tree for Jem and scout to have. So Harper Lee shows that Boo is a nice person no matter what people say.
Another literary element that is used is personification. It said “tinfoil…winking at me in the afternoon Sun.” this is personification because it is giving tinfoil, an inanimate object the ability to wink.
Another element that is used by Harper Lee in the novel is the similes used. An example of this is when she says, “the Radly place drew dill as the moon draws water.”
A fourth element that is used in the novel is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is used many times throughout the novel. One example is that in the beginning and the middle of the novel it has so much to do with the kids finding things out about Boo so it foreshadows that he will play a big part in the book. These are only four of the many Literary elements that are used in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird.
A large amount of literary elements and or/devices are used throughout “To Kill a Mockingbird”, characterization one of many. Harper Lee shows characterization in the description that Jem gives of boo at the very beginning of the book, where he describes Boo Radley to be a fiendish person that would feed on raw animals and that he would creep up to your window in the middle of the night. This would apply to the element of irony, because in reality Boo was nothing like the description that we were given at the beginning, he actually turned out to be a shy caring person.
Events like this continue throughout the book and eventually, Boo is revealed to be a caring, and brave person.
3- Symbolism - This element is used in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird". It is in the title itself. killing a mockingbird, Atticus says, is a sin because all they do is sing beautiful music for us to listen to. When Boo Radley kills a man for attemping to kill Atticus's children, Atticus, being the completly non-bias person he is suggested a trial immediatley. He is persuaded otherwise wen he realizes that would be like killing a mockingbird because of Boo's false reputation.
4- Imagery - This is an exrememly important element for certain readers who like to picture what is happening as they read. It is the description of characters and events using strong adjectives that "paint a picture" of what is taking place in your mind.
Setting is one of the literary devices used in To Kill a Mockingbird. The setting of the novel is Maycomb, Alabama, in the early 1930’s. This is very important because the novel takes place during a time of racism and prejudice. As a result, a man gets convicted of a crime he was not guilty of.
Symbolism is another literary device used in the novel. Symbolism plays an important role in the novel because Harper Lee uses a mockingbird to symbolize Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. The mockingbird symbolizes Boo and Tom because Boo and Tom are seen as terrible and awful people when they really aren’t.
Climax is also a literary device used in To Kill a Mockingbird. The climax of the story is when Boo saves the children from Bob Ewell. This is an important part of the story because it is the first time Boo comes out of his house.
Characterization is also a literary device used in the novel. Boo Radley is characterized in the novel. Everyone says he’s 6 and a half feet tall, eats raw squirrels, cats, has rotton teeth, and his eyes big out of his head. This is important because Boo does not truly look like that, people just make assumptions and gossip about him.
There are many literary elements in To Kill a Mockingbird for example characterization. For instance, in the book Atticus is noble and respectable. He is respected by the black community. He is noble because he stands up for Tom Robinson and does the right thing by attempting to save Tom. Another literary element is the setting. The setting takes place during the great depression, in Maycomb, Alabama. The setting relates to the fact that there is prejudice because of the time period. Also symbolism is a very powerful literary element. For example the saying “it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Said by Atticus on page 90 symbolizes how Tom was an innocent man. And he was eventually killed because he was falsely accused of rape. Prejudice plays a very powerful role in this novel. The whole story ended the way it did because of prejudice. For example Bob was prejudice against Tom and said that he raped his daughter. Tom ended up dieing at the end of the novel because of prejudice.
characterization ”Jem gave a reasonable description of Boo: Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained- if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped , and he drooled most of the time.” (pg.13)
Setting is one of the literary devices. The setting of To Kill a Mockingbird is in Maycomb, AL in the 1930’s in a racist and prejudice Harper Lee used characterization in the book, Jem describes Boo Radley:
community. As a result of a man gets convicted of a crime that he is not guilty of, (Tom Robinson).
Similes Harper Lee uses them to describe events.
“Good evening, Mrs. Dubose! You look like a picture this evening.”
Harper Lee is trying to describe that Mrs. Dubose looks good.
Symbolism: symbolism plays and important role in the book because Harper Lee symbolizes Tom and Boo with a Mocking bird. Tom and Boo are described as two mean “monsters” but in reality they are both nice and caring people
One literary element portrayed in To Kill A Mockingbird characterization. It’s used to describe several of the characters in the book, but one stands out. In the beginning of the novel the children and some of the adults tell some nasty and descriptive stories about Boo Radley. This gives the reader to picture him and think of some of the stories the he was supposed to be a part of. Another element is foreshadowing, when Harper Lee wrote that Scout and Jem found many things in the knot hole the reader had to think who put the stuff in there. One possibility is that Boo Radley put the treasures in the whole. Another moment like this was when Jems pants were perfectly sewed and folded over the fence. The next Element is imagery, when the children were walking back from the play at Halloween Harper Lee described the fight scene she said you could hear heavy footsteps. The reader immeditaly knew it was someone the children had not invited to walk with them on that night. We later found out the man that was grunting and breathing heavly and walking like he was top heavy was Bob Ewell. The last literary element was symbolism. When I was reading this I sometimes questioned why the novel was named To Kill A Mockingbird. But after I finished reading I realized that many characters portrayed a Mockingbird. Boo Radley definitely did because he was very innocent because the stories he told were absolutely not true. Also in the mob scene scout was also a also innocent face when the mob was going to the jail to kill Tom Robinson.
In To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee uses literary elements to describe Characters and places. She uses mockingbird as a symbol. Tom Robinson is just like a mockingbird. He is falsely convicted of raping a white girl. So once he walks into the court everyone already thinks he is guilty. What they are doing to him is like killing a mockingbird because he never harmed anyone but is still being convicted of this trial. Also Boo Radley is like a mockingbird. Everyone tells rumors about him and spread lies when he hasn’t done anything to anyone. Harper Lee also uses similes like “Jem you’re as healthy as a tree” and metaphors “Jem you escaped Boo Radley, 5 rapid dogs chasing you”. That is how Harper Lee uses literary elements in To Kill A Mockingbird.
The author used characterization to describe the character Bob. Harper Lee describes him as a cold hearted racist who accuses Tom Robinson (a black man) of rape. Another literary element is symbolism. The main symbol in this story is a mockingbird. In this novel Tom Robinson relates to the Mockingbird because he has don’t nothing wrong and yet he’s still being accused of rape. Tom was a good man and did what he could do to help. It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird because they never do anything wrong, all they do is sing music.
There are many literary elements in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird and there are many examples of them.
-Characterization: In the novel, the antagonist is Bob Ewell because he is the character in opposition of Atticus and Tom. Bob’s character is a poor man who is not educated and looked for a way to accuse a black man of doing something bad to justify that he is not an educated man. I think he felt embarrassed at himself that he couldn’t read or write. He accused Tom of rape and ended up getting Tom to be ruled guilty. He said that Tom raped his daughter and that he beat her also. The evidence was against Bob but he still got Tom to be ruled guilty. “Do you agree with the description of Mayella’s injury” This was a quote of the trial and it was when Bob was on the stand.
-Conflict: Atticus faces a type of conflict in the novel and the one I thought was the biggest is a person against society. Atticus decides to defend Tom Robinson because he feels he is innocent. He decides to go against the town, who is not with him for him doing this. The town is mostly white and Atticus is about to defend a black man, which was wrong in this time period. This happens when he questions Bob Ewell who is a white man trying to defend Tom in court. When Scout and Jem are in school, they get made fun of because of what their father is doing.
-Foreshadowing: I think that you can predict a lot of things in this story mainly about the trial with Tom. Before the trial started you could sort of get the feeling that Tom was going to be ruled guilty because of his background and when this story took place. During the trial, the evidence was against Bob and Mayella but they still won the case.
-Protagonist: I think the protagonist could have been a lot of people in the novel but I think that Atticus is the one who shows it most. In the story Atticus is one of the few people in this time period that does something that is helpful to African Americans. This was the right thing to do and the African American community gave respect to him for doing it. This is expressed when Atticus defends Tom against rape charges given to him by Bob Ewell.
One literary device used in To Kill a Mockingbird is foreshadowing. In the beginnning of the book Scout says, "...we sometimes discussed the events leading to his accident. I maintain that the Ewells started it all, but Jem, who was four years my senior, said it started long before that. He said it all began the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out." (pg.3) The whole novel led up to the event that explains what happened and how Jem's arm broke.
First-person point of view is also used in the novel. Scout, the narrator is also one of the main characters in the story. In the book you see things from how she looks at them and her opinion of stuff. She also uses "I" when talking about what something she did. For example, "I assumed that the whole family would be present to watch me perform, but I was disapointed." (pg. 253)
Symbolism is one of the most important literary elements in To Kill a Mockingbird. A mockingbird symbolizes two characters in the story, Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. A mockingbird is given the description of being a kind and gentle creature who is only on the Earth to do good. Boo Radley and Tom Robison are both just this, but are thought of as very bad people.
Setting is also used in the novel. The story took place in a small town called Maycomb, Alabama. Everyone in the town know everything about everyone else and there was always gossip going around that started rumors. The time period was around the 1930's. This was very important to the novel because it was when racism was a very big problem.
Literary divices are used in great books. Harper Lee the author of To Kill a Mockingbird uses many of those literary divices to keep readers interested. One literary divice she uses is characterization. She describes each character thoroughly in detail. Harper Lee explains how Boo Radley was known as a horrible, crazy man who eats cats for dinner. Those little details give the reader the ability to visualize the way that character looks and acts. She also explains how Bob Ewell was drunk man who didn't have money and stayed in the woods all day. The reader is able to get an idea of what kind of a person Bob is. In almost every story authors use a climax as a literary device, but some stories have better, more exciting climaxes than others. The climax in To Kill a Mockingbird was probably when Tom Robinson was proven guilty. At this part of the book Scout comes to the realization that the world isn't what she had the impression of it being. Another literary divice Harper Lee used was symbolism. A very important symbol in the novel was the mockingbird. Like we discussed in class, it symbolized innocence. The mockingbird represented innocence in a number of ways. One person who acted like a mockingbird was Boo Radley he never came out of his house and never harmed a soul until Bob Ewell. He is like a mockingbird because as described in the book mockingbirds don't do anything but sing to the world. Boo went out to save the Finch kids and that was all he intended. Scout had said making him go on trial would almost be like shooting a mockingbird because Boo didn't do anything wrong. The last literary divice Harper Lee uses is irony. One very good example of irony was when Scout's teacher was teaching the class about Adolf Hitler. She said how she thought it was not right for HItler to treat the jews in such a horrible manner. Scout recalls that when she was walking out of the courtroom that same teacher had turned to another women and had said that something must be done about the blacks in Maycomb County. It is ironic that the teacher isn't practicing what she is preeching. It was very hypocritical for the teacher to do that.
Imagery-it’s created on page 149 when Atticus is at the jail and Scout is describing the square “Giant monkey puzzle bushes bristled in each corner and between them an iron hitching rail glistened under the street lights.”
Foreshadowing- 255 “we had slowed to a cautious gait, and were feeling our way forward … it was near the Radley lot but the Radley were not curious” something kind of tells you something is going to happen at the tree.
Irony- “Bob Ewell fell on his knife. He killed himself” 273 this is ironic because he was trying to kill Scout and Jem, but killed himself instead
Climax- the climax of the story is Tom Robinsons trial. The racism is really shown when the verdict is announced and how Tom was treated through out the trial.
There are many literary elements used in To Kill A Mockingbird. One is characterization. The author uses characterization to describe Jem. Jems character is a very emotional person. When Tom Robinson was found guilty Jem had started to cry. “It was Jems turn to cry. His face was streaked with angry tears… “It ain’t right,” he muttered. (Pg-212) Another is Foreshadowing. This was in the beginning of the book when scout relates back to when Jem had broken his arm. “I maintain that Ewells started it all, but Jem, who was four years my senior, said it started long before that.”(Pg-3) That shows that something is going to happen in the book that relates to that quote. Next is symbolism. A symbol in the novel is a mockingbird. The author describes a mocking bird to be a bird that keeps to itself and doesn’t bother anyone. A mockingbird’s talent is to make music for people to enjoy. A mockingbird is a symbol for Tom Robinson because all he did was help people when they needed help. He never bothered anyone. And it’s a sin to kill an innocent person. The last element was imagery. A good image you get is when Jem is describing Boo Radley to Scout and Dill. “Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained-if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scare that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time.”
One literary device is characterization. The author discribes in the begginning of the book how Boo Radley is a mean, nasty, and not a caring person. But later on you see that he is none of that and he actually is a very caring man. The literary element is forshadowing. Forshawdowing is used in the book is when Bob Ewells spits in Atticus' face. Also in the book some people start to say how Bob is seeking revange against Atticus, so it gives you a hint that you will be hearing more about Bob later on in the book.
The setting of the book helps you understand the time period of the book. The setting was in the 1930s in Maycomb, AB. The year was a very important key fact in the book because it set all the climax around it. Also, there was alot of rasicm during the 1930s that also was used in the book.
Symbolism is used through out the book. A mockingbird is one. It stands for someone being kind, nice, gentel, and respectful and only there to do good. The two characters in the book thats are taht symbol is Boo and Tom Robinson.
There are many literary elements and devices used in To Kill A Mockingbird. One element used is characterization. We see this when the author describes Scout. She is described as intelligent, curious, and strong. She likes to learn her own way and not learn in school. She also fights with a lot of the other children and likes to tag along with Jem whenever he is going somewhere. Another element displayed is foreshadowing. We see foreshadowing in the beginning of the novel when the author talks about Boo Radley. She explains him in great detail so we know that he is going to be a big character later on in the novel. A third element used is Similes. The similes in the book help us visualize what is actually going on in the novel. For example on pg 100, Atticus says “Good evening Mrs. Dubose! You look like a picture this evening.” A fourth element used is symbolism. The main symbol in the novel is a mockingbird. The mockingbird represents Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. They both don’t disturb anyone and all they ever are is kind.
Characterization:
1. When Tom Robinson is accused of raping a white woman, the judge asks Atticus to take the case and defend him. Atticus, an honest man takes the case, although he was made fun of and given a hard time about his decision, he still did it. This helps characterize Atticus as a kind man, and someone who is very tolerant. On page 112 it shows how Atticus is very tolerant of Mrs. Dubose and who he thinks she’s a very brave woman. “‘You know, she was a great lady… She was. She had her own views about things, a lot different from mine… I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs. Dubose won…She was the bravest person I ever knew.”
2. Foreshadowing: When Jem and Scout played games about Boo Radley and his family in front of their house, Atticus would yell at them and tell them not to play those games. On page 40 when Jem and Scout and Dill are playing “Boo Radley”, Atticus asks them what they’re doing and is suspicious about their game. “’What are you doing with those scissors, then? Why are you tearing up that newspaper? If it’s today’s I’ll tan you… Give me those scissors’, Atticus said. ‘They’re no things to play with. Does this by any chance have anything to do with the Radley’s?’”
3. Symbolism: In the novel there was a lot of symbolism. One of the symbols was a mocking bird, symbolizing Boo Radley. At the end of the book when Bob Ewell attacks Jem and Scout, Boo Radley saves them. They find Bob Ewell laying dead in the woods with a kitchen knife in him. They think that Boo Radley killed him and Atticus said that they should call the cops and tell them the story. Atticus didn’t like the idea of not telling anyone about it, but Mr. Tate thought that it’d be best if they didn’t talk about it. Scout agreed with Mr. Tate and tried to cheer up Atticus, she said. “Well, it’d be sort of like shootin’ a mockingbird, wouldn’t it?
4. Setting: The setting effects what happens in the book dramatically. In the courtroom with Tom Robinson’s case, the setting and time period had a huge affect on how the decision was made. Since Tom Robison was a black man, he walked everyone knew that there was no way that he would be proven innocent, even though Atticus had proven that it was obviously not true that Tom had raped and abused Mayella. If Tom Robinson’s case had happened now, he would have been proven innocent, but since most of the jury was racist, they said he was guilty.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird there are many literary elements/devices. Symbolism is a big part of the book. The major symbol in this novel is the mockingbird. In the book Atticus states that it is a “sin to kill mockingbird.” It is a sin to kill a mockingbird because all mockingbirds do is make music for people to enjoy. Tom Robinson and Boo Radley symbolize a mockingbird because Tom was a peaceful man who likes to help people but one day when he tried to help a girl named Mayella, she tried to kiss him and her father accused Tom of raping Mayella. Boo Radley is a misunderstood character that keeps to himself and never bothers anyone but people think that he is a monster. Tom and Boo never hurt anyone and are very peaceful just like a mockingbird. Another literary element/device is a metaphor. Metaphors are used throughout the book. An example of a metaphor used in the book would be “ Boo was about six and a half feet tall, judging from his tracks… there was a long jagged scar that ran across his face: what teeth he had were yellow and rotten: his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time.” This quote is comparing Boo Radley to a monster. Another literary element/device is the setting. The setting takes place during the great depression in a town called Maycomb. During this time period discrimination and segregation was very common. Another literary element/device is simile. Similes are also used throughout the book. An example would be “the Radley place drew dill as the moon draws water.” Literary elements and devices are used throughout the novel to kill a mockingbird
Many literary elements are used in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. For example characterization is used in the novel. Characterization is when the methods a writer uses to develop / reveal the personality of a character. Like Harper Lee describes Bob Ewell to be the meanest person and the biggest raciest in all of Maycomb County. Another literary element is the setting. he setting of the book was Maycomb County , Alabama. In Maycomb there were alot of raciest like Mr .Ewell. Mr. Ewell hated every person that was not white. He didnt like blacks or he didnt like the people that like the blacks.
Characterization- When Jem describes Boo Radley, he describes him as a man who doesn’t show up much in their lives. “He goes out all right, when its pitch dark.” –page 12. “Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained—if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped and he drooled most of the time.” –page 13
Foreshadowing-halloween. Jem hears footsteps behind him and Scout walking home from the halloween pageant. You know that it is one of the mysterious characters mentioned in the novel. At first I thought "oh Boo Radley" but then I thought a bit more and decided that it had to be Bob Ewell.
Symbolism "its a sin to kill a mockingbird" This relates to Tom Robinsons unfair, guilty verdict. He was just trying to help Mayella out and he expected nothing. Mayella was a lonly girl who didnt have many friends. and she had never kissed a boy. So she was attracted to a black man? why does that make it rape?
Setting-the setting had alot to do with the story line. It was in a small town in the south with many negro people. It took place during the Great Depression, World War Two, and the most crucial time of segregation. Otherwise Tom Robinson wouldnt have been found guilty with an all white jury.
There are alotof literary elements used in TKAM. One literary element is the setting. An example of the setting from the novel is “Maycomb was an old town, it was a old town when I read about it. In rainy weather the grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square.” Another literary element used in TKAM was characterization. The author used characterization to describe the character Bob. Harper Lee describes him as a cold hearted racist who accuses Tom of rape. Another literary element is symbolism. The main symbol in the book is a mockingbird. In this novel Tom relates to the Mockingbird because he didnt do nothing wrong and yet he’s was still being accused of rape. Tom was a good man and did what he could do to help. It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird because they never do anything wrong, all they do is sing music.
There are many literary elements used throughout the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird. Bob Ewell demonstrates one of these because he was the antagonist of the novel. He was an evil, ignorant and prejudice man and was the rival to Tom Robinson and Atticus Finch. Bob had no compassion for others and did not care if he hurt innocent people. Another literary term used in the novel is foreshadowing. At first Boo Radley is known as the crazy phantom next door but when there are presents left in the tree and Jem’s pants are mended, it hints that Boo Radley was responsible for these actions and foreshadows that he is not the monster everyone thinks he is. Another Literary element was Symbolism, which played a big role with the title of the book “To Kill a Mocking Bird”. In this book many innocent people are destroyed by evil. The mockingbird represents the idea of innocence and goodness; hence to kill a mocking bird is to destroy innocence. Tom Robinson, Jem, Boo Radley, and Mr. Raymond all have a connection to the title. They all have been hurt or destroyed through contact with evil. Finally an additional literary element used strongly in Maycomb was conflict. People in Maycomb had a strong dislike for the African American community. This prejudice was shown throughout the novel when Bob and Mayella Ewell accused Tom Robinson of rape. Tom is convicted by an all white jury and sent to jail for a crime that is evident he did not commit.
In the novel there are several literary elements used. One literary element is setting; setting is the time and place of a story, play or in this case novel, the setting in To Kill A Mocking Bird plays a very important role in the novel. The setting of the novel is a town in the Deep South, during the great depression, in a time when segregation was still in practice. The setting plays an important role in the novel, because Tom Robinson, a black man, is wrongly tried and convicted of raping a woman, if the setting had been different, this plotline would not worked out as well. The great depression was a terrible time, especially for a character like Bob Ewell, a drunk whose life never amounted to anything, this is part of the reason he decides to accuse Tom of raping his daughter Mayella, the town believes him because it’s the south during a time when they thought African- Americans were not as good as other people, so obviously they would side with a white man over a black man. Another literary element used in the novel is mood. Mood is the atmosphere of a situation. In the novel you can tell the town of Maycomb has a racist atmosphere, and in scenes when the childeren are crying or getting upset you can feel the sadness in the mood.
1) Climax- is use in TKAM alot. The climax of the story is when Boo Radley saves the children from Bob Ewell.
2) Characterization- When Harper Lee describes any person she uses detail and makes you thin k about what they look like.(page 270 when scout describes boo)
3) Symbolism-In TKAM symbolism is used when representing Tom Robinson as a mockingbird.
4)Setting- The novel talks about the town of Maycomb and describes it really well. Since it takes place in the south in the 1930's there was alot of racism going on. That is why Tom Robinson lost the case, because he was black.
1- Characterization is what a Writer uses to identify what type of person someone is. It will describe how social, how intelligent and how emotional a character is or can be, and how he or she will react to certain events. This is shown in “To Kill a Mockingbird” when Atticus, an extremely honest and non-bias lawyer is asked to take a case involving an African American named Tom Robinson who has been accused of raping and beating a white woman. The judge of the court appoints Atticus to be the lawyer for Tom because he knows that he would put up a good fight. Atticus being the fair man he is, accepted even though he would go up against an all white jury, he almost wins his case. This incident helps characterize Atticus.
2- Setting is a time and place where a novel or play occurred in. It is used in "To Kill a Mockingbird" because it says that the novel takes place in Maycomb, Alabama, in the early 1930’s. This is a very important time because it is a time of prejudice and racism. Because of the time period, a man called Tom Robinson gets convicted of a crime that he did not commit. It is also the time of the Great Depression and everyone is trying to survive in these hard times.
3- Symbolism is when any object represents more then it really is, when the object stands for a larger idea. In the novel, Tom Robinson is symbolized as a mockingbird. A mockingbird symbolizes innocents. Tom is being convicted of a crime he had no part in. He was only doing the right thing by helping Mayella, and for that, he is considered the criminal. Atticus once said, “ It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (90) Tom was a mockingbird and was killed for being innocent.
4- Imagery is words that are used to create images in the reader's mind. During the novel rumors are made of Boo Radley that he is six-and-a-half-feet tall and at night he eats cats and what not. This can paint a very descriptive picture in the readers mind.
Literary terns that are/is used in To Kill a Mocking Bird are/is:
1. Foreshadowing. One way this is used in the trial. You have the feeling that Tom will be considered guilty even when all the facts point to him being innocent. You get this feeling because the author portrays the town in a very racist way. Only a few were open-minded and willing to accept everybody.
2. Setting. This helped contribute a lot to the views of the people in the town. This helped aid the feelings towards Tom from the jury just because he was black. The jury was very racist then, but if it happened now then he would have a much better chance because he wouldn’t have a racist jury against him.
3. Symbolism. The author uses symbolism to represent Boo and Tom. She represented these to men with a mockingbird. The connection was both of these men were good men and they didn’t harm anybody. People just assumed Boo was evil because he never came out of his house. They viewed Tom as evil because he was black and everyone was racist.
4. Climax. This is a big literary element because this proved how racist the town was. The climax was the trial.
Harper Lee uses many literary devices in the novel " To Kill A Mockingbird" four example of these devices are as followed:
Foreshadowing:
Jem and scout findinh presents in the oak tree from boo Radley is a foreshadow that boo is a kind and caring person who sxihibits goodness.
Imagery:
Imagery is used in the scene of the book when Bob Ewell attacks the Finch children. As the attack takes place Lee uses language to bring a picture to our mind and we have a sense of the fear the children experienced. Scout hears a crunching sound and Jem screams (we later realize that is when jem's arm broke) Scout runs to Jem but is grabbed and squeezed then she is freed and franticly search for Jem on the ground finds the figure of an unshaved man smelling of whiskey.
Climax:
The cimax takes place when the jury finds tom Robinson guilty. It is the first time that scout and jem realizethe morals their father atticus has taught them. cannot hold up to the evils of human nature. Maycomb is a town full of prejudice and Tom Robindon could not be telling the truth becuase a black men should never feel sorry for a white women and therefore he must have raped her. This verdict crushes the Finches children beliefs in justice.
Symbolism:
Throughtout the book the mockingbird is a symbol of innocence. Boo and Tom are two characters in the novel who are innocent but are destroyed by the evil actions of the town people.
There are many different elements in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The first element is
Characterization.
1. When Tom Robinson is accused of rapping Mayella. When he went to trial every body thought that he actually rapped Mayella. The things Atticus says about Tom proves that he is guilty but because he is black no-mater what Atticus says he will be appointed guilty of rapping Mayella. When he was innocent all along.
Setting
2. This takes place in Macomb, AL in the 1930’s where racism is very popular. The case on Tom Robinson takes place in a court room where the blacks and whites are separated. The blacks sit on the top of the balcony and whites sit on the bottom. If this trial was taking place today there is no way Tom would be guilty.
Point of view
3. The novel is a first person talking. Also scout is the person’s point of view that takes place in the novel. Scout is about 7-8 years old and telling a story.
Foreshadowing
4. When Jem and scout where walking home from scouts play when they here
footsteps and he thinks it was Dill playing a trick on them. When Jem and scout walked the footsteps walked and sooner and later a mysteries person jumped out of the bushes and tried to kill the kids. Then boo jumped out of nowhere and saved the kid’s. This show’s foreshadowing because when they herd the footsteps it seemed like something bad was going to happen.
The first literary element in To Kill a Mockingbird is symbolism. In the novel, they use a mockingbird as their symbol. This mockingbird represents Boo Radley. At the end of the novel, he saved Scout and Jem from Bob Ewell. The town wanted to put him on trial because Bob Ewell was found dead. If they put Boo on trial, he would have no reason because Boo saved the children. A second literary element is setting. This book took place in the 1930’s. If it took place during another time period, the trial with Tom Robinson would have been different. The third literary element is foreshadowing. During the trial, the author gave us clues that Tom was going to be proven guilty. He was in a court room filled with racist whites. The fourth literary element is characterization. The author describes Boo Radley the most. Boo Radley was considered a shy, mean, murder type boy.
