The way that i interperted the moral of the story was that you should not take what isn't yours and by being generous and a good person good things will happen to you. I beileve this because Roger was taken in by Luella and did not try to take her things or run away and he recieved a meal and money to buy the blue suede shoes he wanted. Ms.Bates trys to have an influence on Rogers by taken him in and acting as if he was hhis mother since Roger had no one. She also fed him and gave him money without so much as a question of where he lived or where his family was, she was being very hospitable and generous. Roger learned that she shouldnt steal to get what he wants instead try a different approach.(Also never try to steal from Ms.Bates again).

The lesson the story tells is when you do a good deed you are returned with a good deed. Ms. Bates has an influence on Roger's life because she takes him into her home to teach him right from wrong. She tells him to clean up his face and get rid of all the dirt. She says to him that it was wrong to steal and he should be ashamed for it. Ms. Bates wants Roger to know that he should not have to steal to get something and should ask to get something. Roger learned that doing the right thing, will be awarding. Since he was nice to Ms. Bates and listened to her he achieved what he wanted. He was given ten dollars to buy a pair of new suede shoes. He was also given the chance to have a meal and become clean.

I interpreted the moral of this story to ask for something before taking it. Roger tries to take Ms. Jones' purse, but ends up tripping and getting caught. Since ROger doesn't have any family to support him, Ms. Jones sees that he does not really know right from wrong. She takes him to her apartment and tells him to wash his face, and even though the door is right opan and Roger can sprint away, he decides to listen which shows he's undertsanding that Ms. Jones wants to impact his life. She asks him why he tried taking her purse and Roger replies because he wanted to buy new suade shoes with the money. After Ms. Jones fixes up a dinner, she gives ROger ten dollars and tells him to go buy those shoes. This expirience probably helped Roger understand that he does not always have to steal to get what he wants, some people like Ms. Jones will just help him along in his life.

The lesson of the story was that you should not steal from other people to live. you shouldnt take other peoples things without their permission. if you do good thing and work hard for the things you get good things will hapen to you but if you are a mean bad person and never work you wont get anythjing in return. by roger being nice in Mrs. jones house and not trying to run, he got ten dollors in return.
Mrs Jones tryes to have an inflence in Roger because she takes him in to her house, cleans his face and gives him a hot meal and she is hoping that by doing this Roger will become a better person, and not steal things from anyone anymore.
I think that from being treated nicly and having someone to care about him he bacame a better person and realized that you dont need to steal things to get the stuff you want. if you are nice person people will give you things in return.

the lesson of the story is that if you do something nice something nice will happen to you back. although roger tried to steal luellas bag when she took him home he did not try to tale the bag. because of this luella asked what the money was for. he said he wanted blue swead shoes.so she gave him the money to buy new shoes because he did not try to steal her money. this proves my thoughts for the lesson of the story

The moral in this story is that you should not take what you don't own without permission. In this short story Roger tries to take Ms.Bates pocket book, but ms. bates catches him and takes Roger to her house. She said "you don't need to steal to get something. You could have asked." this shows you that maybe if you want something you could ask someone and they might get it for you. Ms.Bates clean roger up. Washes his face and gives him food she tells roger morals and at the end she gives roger money for the shoes he wanted. She had a very positive influence on roger.

What Luella was trying to do was to try and turn Rogers life around in the short time that she had him in her grasp, which I think that she succeeds in doing because when she had turned her back to Roger to do things, he stayed within her vision range, and didn't take anything. He could have run out the open door with the pocket book that he had failed to mug from her in a second but he didn't. I think that in this way Roger learned that he didn't have to mug or steal to get what he wanted, in fact he'd probably get more if he DIDN'T steal and/or mug from others.

In “Thank-You Ma’am” the lesson or moral of the story is that being truthful to a person always helps you in the end. (Karma) Mrs. Bates is very honest towards Roger. She treats him with respect and tells him that no one is perfect including herself. She said that when she was younger she stole and she wasn’t happy about it but she tries to remove that stain from her life by being generous and charitable even though she is very poor. She influences Roger not to steal and to be honest with people. Roger learned that to have people be nice to you, you have to be nice back. Hence not stealing their purses, or at least attempting to!!

The lesson in Thank you Ma’m is that sometimes acts of kindness or a good deed can go further then we know. It reminds us that no one is perfect and it’s better to take action and help someone rather then sit back and do nothing.

Ms. Bates tries to influence Roger’s life by giving him some type of parental attention she knew he probably lacked. Trusting him, and revealing to him that she also has done things in her life she wasn’t proud of would also help Roger feel as though there is hope for him also.

Roger learned that he is worthy of trust and self- respect. He learned the difference between right and wrong and hopefully he learned that crime is not the answer.

The lesson of the story is to never steal personal belongings from anyone. If you do try to steal something from someone the items owner is entitled to do what he believes is justice. This will allow the person to repent for his actions like Roger in Thank you Ma'aml.

Ms. Bates tries to act as a positive influence towards roger. Also she shows him tough love by holding him by the shirt for his actions. “Well, you didn’t have to snatch my pocketbook to get some suede shoes,” said Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. “You could of asked me”. She teaches him stealing his wrong. She connects to roger by explaining that the things she’s done, she does not him to follow in her foot steps.

This quote also describes what he learns from Ms. Bates. Ask do not steal. He does not want to a life of misdeeds.

The moral of the story is to treat others with respect and kindness and you will get respect and kindness back. Mrs. Bates tries to influence Rogers life by showing him that if you act well you will get good things, that’s why she gave Roger the $10. I think that roger learned not to steal and more respect for others.

She also says that stealing is wrong and he should be ashamed of himself. Ms. Bates explains that if he wanted money he should not steal it to buy himself a pair of shoes because, “Shoes got by devilish ways will burn your feet.” Roger learned that if you do the right thing you shall be kindly rewarded. At the end of the story Ms. Bates not only gave him a meal and washed his face but she also gave him those ten dollars that he needed to buy the shoes he wanted. Roger probably knows now to never steal again thanks to Ms. Bates

I think the lesson of “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes is asking to borrow or have something before you take it. Mrs. Bates said that she would have given Roger the money if he had just asked. Mrs. Bates influences Roger by bringing him home, and caring for him as if he was her own child. She does influence him because when she leaves her purse unwatched, and lets him loose, he does not run. She washes his face, feeds him, and gives him the money for his suade shoes. Mrs bates was a very kind and generous woman who Roger learned from. He learned that if he is a good person, good things will happen to him.

i think the overall lesson the story is trying to tell is to not steal and be kind to other people. Roger see's Ms. Bates shoes and decides he wants them so he tries to steal them and Mrs. Bates see's him. She sees that Roger is obviosly without a family since he is out at 11:00 o'clock at night and tries to teach Roger the right thing to do. Ms. bates takes Roger back to her small apartment and cooks for him. She then ends up giving him $10 when he leaves so he can go and buy the blue suede shoes. She obviosly thinks that Roger has learned his lesson and that he wont do this again. She says "...did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run now." She ends up having confidence in him. Ms. Jones treated Roger very tough because she thought roger needed it. He had to learn a lesson and he learned that he will probably never do that again.

The lesson of the story is to not steal or take things without asking, and if you can do that good things might happen.Ms.Bates definitly has a great impact on Roger's life. For one thing Roger learns a valuable lesson against stealing. When Roger attempted to grab Ms.Bates's purse he tripped and fell causing him to get caught. However instead of taking Roger straight to the police station she decided to teach him a lesson first. So she took him back to her appartment told him to wash his face and give him a lecture on stealing. With a clear oppourtunity to run away Roger decided to stay due to the risk of him getting caught once again. After a quick meal with Ms.Bates Roger was given a short speech against stealing to get the blue suede shoes that he wanted. After this whole ordeal Roger was given the 10 dollars needed to buy the shoes and was told to never steal again to get the things he needs but to earn them.

I think the stories lesson would be that if it is not yours then don’t take it. Another lesson would be if you are kind, you will be awarded. Ms Bates has an influence on Rogers’ life because she literally dragged him into her home and was teaching him wrong from right. Ms Bates told Roger that he should never steal to get a pair of shoes that he wants because, “Shoes got by devilish ways will burn your feet.” She told him that if he wanted a pair of shoes, she could have just asked her. Roger seems to be a little confused at this. At the end, Ms Bates let him wash his face, eat a meal at her home and gave him the ten dollars to get those blue suede shoes that he wanted. Thanks to Ms Bates, Roger knows that stealing is wrong and will probably never do it again.

I think the moral of the story is that you should not take what isn’t yours and if your thoughtful and a kind person to other then good things may happen to you. I believe this because Ms. Bates take Roger in and roger chooses to stay and receives a meal and 10 dollars to get the shoes he wanted. I think Ms. Bates tries to have an influence on Rogers life by instead of getting him into trouble teach him, teach him the proper way to act. She did this by taking him in and treating him like one of her own because Roger doesn’t really have anyone to go home to. Roger learned that you don’t always have to steal to get what you want and that some people will help you get what u want.

I think the moral of the story is that you shouldn't commit a crime that you aren't willing to accept the consequences for, and if you just do the right thing, right things will happen to you. I think Luella did make a significant change in Roger's life. She taught him right from wrong and made it very clear that if he ever commited another crime she'd come an find him. I think she scared him enough that he won't commit another crime. Roger learned that it is not right to steal from someone. He also learned that if he just does the right thing he will get most of the things he wants.

This lesson of this story is to ask before you take. Also, it teaches you that if you do the right thing, you may be rewarded. In "Thank you Ma'am", Ms. Bates trys to help turn the direction in which Roger is going. She takes him back to her house, after he had tried to steal her purse. She feeds him, lets him wash up and talks to him. She lets him know what he had done was wrong. She tells him never to try and steal again and how ashamed he should be for doing it. When shes leaves the door open, making it clear that Roger can quikly run away from her, he does'nt. He sits there looking back and fourth at the door proving that he was actually learning from her.
Then, before he is leaving to go home, Mrs. Bates hands him ten dollars to go buy the pair of blue suede shoes he wanted. I think Roger learned that he needs to straighten out and become a much better person. He now knows he may even be rewarded for doing the right thing.

I think the lesson of this story is to ask before you take. It also teaches you that if you do the right thing, you may be pleasantly surprised at how good it makes you feel. In "Thank you Ma'am" Ms. Bates trys to assist the direction in which Roger is going in his life. She takes him back to her house, after he had tried to steal her purse. She feeds him, lets him wash up and speaks to him about what’s right and what’s wrong. She tells him not to steal again and how embarrassed he should be for doing it. Ms. Bates leaves the door open, making it obvious that Roger can quickly run away but he doesn’t. He sits there looking around and taking in what Ms. Bates had just said to him. Before he left Ms. Bates handed him ten dollars to go buy the pair of blue suede shoes he had wanted. I believe Roger learned that if you are a good person good things can happen (karma) and (what goes around comes around).

The short story "Yes ma'am" teaches a very important moral, and lesson. A 14-15 year old boy named Roger trys to mug a lady named Ms. Bates. She catches him and takes him to her house and offers food and conversation. While they talk, Ms. Bates implies to Roger that she might have done the same thing before when she was his age. She asks him what he would have done with the money if he had gotten away. He replys he wanted to but new blue suede shoes. At the end of his stay, Ms. Bates gives him 10 dollars to buy himself shoes. I think Ms. Bates was trying to teach Roger that sometimes people are willing to help, and he does not have to take, rather than just ask.

This story's lesson is that when something good is done to you you are most likly going to return the good deed. When Mrs.Jones yelled at Roger for trying to mug her she was talking to Roger and trying to ask him his reason for doing the act. The reaction for Mrs.Jones probally surprised Roger bc he probally expected her to run away from him. When she asked hi mto come back to her house to eat and wash his face he was shy and finally came with Mrs.Jones. When he was i nthe house he saw the door was open and thought of running but instad stayed and washed his face which was very surprising to me. He also saw her purse right next to him but instead of taking it and running he decided not to. At The end of the story Mrs.Jones gave Roger $10 to buy his new shoes that he wanted. Roger learned a great lesson from the exprience. When Mrs.Jones saw they he didn't run or take her purse she knew that he learned his lesson and that he earned his right to get $10 for the new shoes. He learned that a person could be hard on you at first but once you gain their trust then they would be willing to be a good person to you.

This story's lesson is that you can't take from other people without permission just to get what you want. Roger tries to steal Ms. Bates' pocketbook to buy blue suede shoes. Ms. Bates tries to have a positive influence on Roger's life. She wants to teach him that there is a good person deep down inside everyone. Ms. Bates knows that Roger doesn't have a good home life, so she tries to teach him that there are people in the world that can care for him and that can trust him even if he does something bad. I think Roger learned that just because he wants something he shouldn't take advantage of someone else to get it. He learned that stealing was wrong and that if he asked some one for money instead he might have gotten it.

When i read this short story, the lesson i got out of it was don't steal things that aren't yours. And good things come to good people. This is shown when Roger trys to steal Mrs. Jones pocketbook and get caught. When she brought the boy back to the house, he had the chance to make a run for it, but he knew the right thing to do was to stay so he did.
At the end Mrs.Jones gave him 10 dollars. If he ran he wouldn't have gotten the money.

Mrs. Jones had an influence on Roger by teaching him mannors and right from wrong. When she brought him into her home, she told him to clean him self up, fed him, and told him what he did was wrong and he should never do it again. She was also telling him how she wanted things too when she younger, but she got by without stealing or anything. She was trying to be a motherly figure in his life.

Roger has learned is that stealing isn't right and you should earn money not steal it. I think he also learned how it wasn't fare for anyone to get robbed and he knows right from wrong now and is going to make better decisions in the furture to come.

The lesson of Thank You, M’am is that you should not take something that is not yours from someone. You should ask them if you can have it and if they say no go on your merry way do not steal it. Ms.Bates try’s to teach Roger this by telling Roger that she was once a kid and had done things just like him. But as she got older she learned to respect people and not take things that did not belong to her. She also says that people won’t take you seriously and help you if you look like Roger did dirty face, frail, and neglected. You should strand strong no matter what your case is. Roger learns that if you are respectful and kind things will come to you easier and you might get something in return. Roger learns that even if you are a neglected child it does not give you any different reason to steal.

This storys lesson is that you shouldnt take items that are not yours without asking. Ms. Bates influenced Rogers life because she taught him lessons and morals that he needed because he did not have any family that cared about him and attempted to steal Ms.Jones purse. Ms.Jones teaches him that it is wrong to steal and acts like mother-figure by cooking him food, for dinner and gives him the ten dollars for the blue suede shoes that he wanted. Roger learned that you should not take things without asking and now knows right from wrong and that that there are nice people in the world that can help him out in a time of need.

The moral of the story is to not take what does not belong to you. Roger tried to take Mrs. Jones bag to buy blue suede shoes. And as Mrs. Jones said shoes come be devilish like that will burn your feet. Meaning that if you bought the shoes with money that does not belong to you, you will feel guilty. I think that roger learned a valuable lesson from Mrs. Jones. I don’t think roger will ever forget that day. I think that roger learned not to take other peoples things without permission and hat there are other ways to get what you want then just stealing.

The lesson of this short story called “Thank You M’am” is that you don't have to steal to get something you want and you should just ask or work for what you want. Mrs. Bates influences Roger by making feel execrable about trying to steal the purse but then gives him ten dollars for the suede shoes so he learns if he just asks he can get what he wants. Roger learned that when he does the right thing he will get rewarded. When he tries to steal the purse, she says he should be mortified but then she goes into a different room in her apartment and left Roger alone with her purse and the door was right there but she trusted him to make the right choice now. Roger learned that once he started being polite he was rewarded with a meal and got himself cleaned up. This is how Mrs. Bates influenced Roger in the short story “Thank You M’am”.

The moral of this story is that you should not take anything that doesn't belong to you and should earn the things you want with good ways. On page 90 Ms.Bates says "And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor nobody else's-because shoes got by devilish ways will burn your feet." This means that if you take something without permission that you will feel very guilty about it. Ms.Bates has a very positive influence on Roger. She teaches him morals and was extremely nice to him even though he tried to steal her pocketbook. She brought him back to her house, washed his face, and gave him a good meal. Ms. Bates' kindness really helped Roger because he wasn't really being cared for.Roger learned that next time he wants something that he should ask for it or earn it and not to steal from anyone again.

Also that if you steal something to get what you want, then you'll just end up feeling guilty about it. She helped act like an authority figure and take responsibility for Roger. I think that Roger learned that he has to work for what he wants and not just take it from other people. Also i think he learned that he has to take responsibility for his own actions because in Mrs. Bates' house he could have easily ran away, but he knew it wasn't the right thing to do.

In my opinion, the moral of the story is that you should treat others the same as you want others to treat you. For example you wouldn’t want some random person to steal your purse so you should not steal someone elses purse. Even though Roger stole Ms. Bate’s purse, Ms. Bate treats him the way she would want someone to treat her, with forgiveness. Ms. Bates tries to leave an important impression on Roger by teaching him that stealing isn’t right and that if you work for something, you will be happier. She also teaches Roger to condone some actions people do in order to teach them morals. Ms. Bate’s gives Roger food, cares for him, trusts him and gives him money for the shoes. All of these are actions that Roger is probably deprived of in his home. This leaves a big impression on Roger because he is shocked by her understanding. I think Roger learned many things from the way Ms. Bates treated him. One example of something Roger learned is how to care for himself. He was taught that by cleaning up and acting civilized will get him rewards. Ms. Bates cleaned him and taught him not to steal taught him good morals which she rewarded with ten dollars for new blue suede shoes.

The moral of the story, in my opinion was that, if you see someone having a hard time and you know what they are going through then you should help them. Not just stand there and do nothing. Mrs. Bates has a huge impact on Roger’s life. I say this because she took him in when nobody else would. She helped him get cleaned up and she fed him, when not even his own family would. She also gave him ten dollars for a pair of suede shoes. When, by reading the story you can tell that she has no money to spare but she does it anyways. Mrs. Bate’s did all that even though Roger tried to snatch her purse that day. I think Roger learned, from the way Mrs. Bate’s treated him that he shouldn’t try to steal something if he wants it, just ask. He also learned that if you know what one person is going through, don’t let them go the wrong way; try to straighten them out yourself. I also think that in the future he will remember and if someone tried to steal something from him, he would try to do the same.

I believe in Thank you, m’am the lesson the story tries betrays is you don’t have to be afraid to ask for help from people or for things instead of stealing, lying or cheating. Mrs. Bates knew he was young and was trying to be calm but firm with the boy, Roger. She wanted him to know he was wrong in trying to take her pocketbook but not be-little him or embarrass him. Mrs. Bates influences Roger’s life by being tough and strict but still be kind and generous. She showed him that respect towards other people can get you very far in life. Roger learned there was kindness in everyone and you don’t have to be evil or steal to get the things you want. A little kindness goes a long way. Roger learned that in life you need to respect people to get places.

The lesson in this story is to work for what you want, and that you can’t try and take the easy way out. Roger tried to get out of working hard to buy the blue suede shoes by stealing Ms. Bates purse, but he had gotten caught. Ms. Bates had mentioned to Roger that if he had gotten his shoes the way he planned to, they would burn his feet.
Ms. Bates tries to let him know of the bad deed he had attempted. But instead of treating him badly for doing so, she instead takes care of him and gives him the money he needs so he can buy his shoes.
Roger probably learned that, even if someone makes a mistake they deserve to be forgiven, because everyone messes up once. Roger also probably learned that it’s important to be caring to everyone because you never know their situation.

The lesson or moral in Thank You Ma’am is treating someone else the way you want to be treated. Ms. Bates treats Roger with respect and like an important person.
Ms. Bates tries to have in influence on Rogers’s life by taking him home to her apartment to teach him right from wrong. In the apartment Ms. Bates tells Roger to go and wash his face, while leaving the door wide open. “‘Then, Roger, you go to that sink and wash your face,’ said the woman, whereupon she turned him loose- at last. Roger looked at the door-looked at the woman-looked at the door-and went to the sink.’ ” Roger is trying to show Ms. Bates that he respects what she is doing for him.
Ms. Bates, trusting him, reveals that she has done some regrettable things when she was younger. “I have done things ,too which I would not tell you, son…”
