The old man in the novel said that our lives are controlled by fate is a lie. I on the other hand disagree with his proposal. Sure, some things in our life are controllable, but at times I feel like fate has taken over. For example, have you ever had a goal that you were so close to reaching and then you ended up failing? That is considered fate to me. Fate is telling you that they don’t want you reaching that goal. Sometimes you can reach that goal, but that’s because fate agrees you must achieve it. Many believe the “worlds greatest lie” because they feel like they are the ones in control. They are the only ones that control their lives. Some don’t even believe in fate. They define it as a made up word that people use to get out of depression. “Fate brought us here, not us!” is the usual saying. We have control on some parts of our life, but fate controls if we accomplish it or not.

Yes, everyone is in control of their own destiny. Fate has nothing to do with anything. What we do, influences how the outcome of the game will turn out. If our whole team practiced a lot, then that team would likely win against the other team. It’s all about skill, not about luck. What sounds more likely a person on a team who is just hoping their team is going to win state finals or someone practicing to win the state finals?
People believe in the greatest lie because it gives them an excuse for doing bad. Also if they want to blame someone else for his team’s loss, why not blame a supposed mystical being that controls our life. People who do not admit their failures are likely to believe in the greatest lye. People who work a lot and achieve their goals have no else to thank but themselves for achieving their goals.

Yes I do agree with the old man and think that this is a lie and we do control our own fate. I don’t believe that at a certain point we just lose control of everything in our lives and we can’t live our lives the way we want to live them. I think that this is one of the greatest lies because I think we always control our fate even when things are tough for you but many people will just give up and not try anymore. I think that this is when fate can control what you do and I think you always have to keep trying. I think people that do not want to be successful anymore or control their own lives in any way will become influenced and basically controlled by other things including fate. I also believe that this lie is very believable also because so many people have already made up their minds that this is how their life will be controlled. Many people refuse to believe that they have full control of their life and all of the things that happen in it.

In the book, the old man saiys that the worlds greatest lie is that at a point in our lives, we lose control, and our lives are controlled by fate. I agree with the old man , i think that at all times in our life, we are in control. I belive that this is a lie, and we never lose control to fate. When we are going through tough times in our life, we control our fate , because there are some people that work hgarder than others. If our lives were controled by fate then we would not be able to change the outcome of our life, and i beleive thaty we can. I think that many people beleive the world greatest lie, because sometimes, if the person is leading a bad life, or something bad happens to them, then they want something to blame it on other then themselves.

Yes, i think that everyone is in control of their own destinies. I dont think fate has anything to do with anything. I dont beleive that we just lose control and fate takes over, that's not how it works. I believe that what we do in life influences what will happen to us. Unless you dont want to control your own destiny and you just want to live by fate, you control your own fate. I think that the old man is right. this is also a very believable lie because many people want to think or believe that their lives have been made up and then fate takes over. If something bad is happening to that person and they dont think they have control of their lives anymore, that is when people start believing the worlds greatest lie.

I agree with the old man that the world’s greatest lie is that everything is caused by fate. I believe that everyone controls their lives and has choices. Their lives aren’t planned out for them from before birth. One point that really made me think about this is that if everyone’s life pre-planned then why would the person who chooses their path make them an alcoholic or a drug addict. It was their own choice. I think that the reason that some people believe that your life is already chosen for you is because when something happens they want to be able to say “It was meant to happen” and have something to BELIEVE in. They want something to fall back on if they can’t accomplish their goals. When we do something no matter the outcome we think what would have happened if I chose a different path. Some people agree that fate causes everything but, I don’t.

i believe this is a lie like the old man. i think the choices we make now will control our destiny later. i also believe that some things happen for a reason and we should understand that. the outcome of our choices contols our destiny. so in the end, we control our own destinies kinda.

i think people who have a lot of faith start to believe in the worlds greatest lie. some people may not want to have to deal with the consequences of thier decisions and maybe thats why they believe in the worlds greatest lie. some people maybe dont want to believe that things are thier fault. maybe they dont want thier lives to be thier choosing.

The old man tells Santiago that the worlds greatest lie is that everyone eventually loses control of their lives, and that fate takes them over. I agree with the old man because I do not think it is fate that changes people, but they change by themselves. When you are younger you think as if everything you dream about can be obtained, however people mature and that false hope usually fades away in people, causing them to want something different. Very few people have such a strong will that they will stop at nothing to achienve their childhood dream, and this happens because they have the will on their own, not because fate makes it so. I think people believe the worlds greatest lie because of their religgion. Most religions have ideas about Gods and fates, which makes people think everything is controlled and happens for a reason.

I'm sure that there isn't going to be a point in life where you lose control of everything, but just in case it does happen, you should still have the power to control the situation. I believe that no matter what is going on, you have a choice to control the situation. People believe in the "worlds greatest lie" because if something bad happens, they think that fate is against them or that God doesn't love them. I have a newsflash for the people that believe in this lie, you control your life so suck it up and get on with it.

On page 18, the old man states, "The world's greatest lie...is that...our lives become controlled by fate." I agree with this quote because I feel that everyone controls our lives will be in the future. Our decisions control how we live because they affect. If I do not do my homework, my grade will go down. I am choosing not to complete the homework.
Most people disagree with this quote because some religions feel that our lives are controlled by fate. Another reason is that people do not want to be responsible and believe that they are controlling their future so they believe the world's greatest lie. In addition, they might not try as hard to reach a goal because they might think it is not their faith if I do not happen.

Yes, I agree with the old man because I think that you have control of your own life. I don’t think that your life is planned or controlled by some other force. In my opinion you make the good and bad decisions in life and not destiny. What you do today might affect you further on in your life; it doesn’t depend on faith or anything else. Fate can affect someone’s life because if they set a goal but don’t accomplish it they think that it wasn’t suppose to happened, but if they believe that they cant do it and no matter what happens they won’t stop they take control over their life’s and don’t let fate affect them. I think that Santiago has control over his life because his family wanted him to be a priest but he decided to become a shepherd because he was fallowing his dream. If he would’ve stop and believe that his destiny was to be come a priest I would say that his life was controlled by his faith.

At a point in the book the old man says that the world's biggest lie is that our lives are controlled by fate. I agree with the old man. I think that we are always in total control of our life. I think that there are things that make us have to change things in our lives sometimes, but we are always in control of what those changes are. Human beings have an incredible power. They have the power to do whatever they want, and that includes having the power to do whatever we want with our lives. I think most of the time if something in our life went wrong and we didn't fix it, it means that we just didn't make the right decision. The other power we have is if something goes very wrong and we made a bad decision, we can always fix it. If it is fixable, fate has nothing to do with it. I think fate interferes with a lot of things, but I don't think our lives are one of them.

Yes, I believe that everyone is in control of his or her own fate or destiny. I believe this because whatever actions we choose to do impact our lives in the future (the decisions we make dictate our lives). I agree with Bobby on how people believe in the greatest lie because it gives them an excuse for doing bad. They are too afraid to admit their failures because they lack confidence. I do not believe that fate can dictate our lives; it is within ourselves to make the good/bad decisions, and no one else. People tend to believe this lie because they think that they aren’t powerful enough to control their lives. In the end whatever happens in your life is based on what you did in the past.

I firmly beleive that what the old man says is a lie.I beleive that whatever decisions we make effect what happens in the future. If we encounter a problem it's what we do then that will effect the outcome of the problem to which we face.If what the old man was saying was true then our fate would already be laid out for us and we have no control over what happens however this can't be true because as we grow older and become wiser we tend to make better decisions in our lives. Now sometimes we screw up and some people may argue that our mistake was planned and pre-set to happen, however when we do make the right choice I think that we personally affected what happens after that.

If fate was real, we could be sitting on our behinds everyday and maybe not get fat, or not going to auditions and just be scouted. To not get fat, you have to exercise. And to be in a hot dance company, you have to audition and keep working.

Things like that do not just happen to any ordinary person.
You always have to reach for something if you really want it, and what you want is not always easy to reach. Life is not always easy. That is just the way it is. If your life is easy and perfect, then there has to be something wrong.

Yes, I believe that this is the World's Greatest Lie because everyone has control of their life and although there are obstacles that they have to overcome, if they want something that bad they'll be able to get over them. Everything that we do in our lives will come back and either help us, or hurt our future. When something happens that makes your dream or goal more difficult people want to give up but they don't want to take the blame for it or feel bad so they blame that they couldn't do anything about it, even though they could. So they believe the World's Greatest Lie. You control the life that you live and your future.

I believe that the old man is true when he says that our world's greatest lie is that at a point in our lives fate controls our life. Fate is your destiny, or events that will inevitably happen in the future. I believe that each and every person can make decisions in there life that will help structure their life, good or bad. You are able to control your own actions that will determine your future. People chose to believe this lie when they can't handle the fact that there life is the way it is because of their own actions. They don't take responsibility and then scream innocent. Agreeing with Matt, I believe that your past determines your future, not your fate.

I think that this is and isn’t a lie. I believe that we do control our own destinies, but that we are chosen to be someone in advance. Though the challenges and obstacles while achieving that destiny are are own decisions. So the steps taken in order to achieve your goal are your own. I think people believe the “worlds greatest lie” because they believe that they are in control of the steps in their own path, but once you make a wrong turn you need like a map or a sign to help you on your journey.

We are always in control of our destinies, if we work hard at what we want then we will get it. If we make a bad choice that leads us down bad path in our life, we can always fix that mistake. Many people believe in the world’s greatest lie because people believe that they control their lives not anyone or anything else. We control our own lives.

In The Alchemist the old man states that "the world's greatest lie....is that at a certain point in ur lives, we lose control of what'd happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate." I agree and disagree with the old man. I agree that we can control our fate by our desicions and our actions. I do not agree with him because whatever we do in life, however we end up, that is our destiny and that is our fate. I think there are mixed feelings about the "world greatest lie". Some people are careful about what they do because they feel like they have to be careful about all the decisions they make but other people are care free because they feel like what ever happens, happens and thats their destiny. I have both feelings.

I halfway agree with the old man, I believe that we can control some of our lives ourselves but I also believe that some of our life is controlled by destiny. I think that some things are out of our hands, like if you are supposed to take a plane somewhere and your car wont start, so you miss your flight. You did not choose to have your car stall. Therefore it was destiny that made you miss your flight. I think people believe in the world's greatest lie because we don't want to believe that we are the ones who cause ourselves to fail. We want to have something or someone to blame for our mistakes and problems. If we have no one but ourselves to blame then when we fail we don't want to get up and try again because we are afraid that we will make the same mistake over again.

As once stated in a movie called the Renaissance Man, “the choices we make, dictate the life we lead.” The Old Man in the novel discussed an issue pertaining to the world’s greatest lie, that the fate of each individual alive is already predetermined no matter what decisions that person makes throughout his/her life. However, I feel that the mere belief that something else controls your life is simply an excuse made by individuals who are not happy with what they have become. Each person who believes the “world’s greatest lie” is simply trying to justify why they did not follow their dreams and live the lives they once imagined. Personally, I do not believe in this “great lie” because I like to think that I am in control of everything that I do and that there is no higher force dictating the life I lead.

In some situations I believe that we control our own destinies. For example if you have a penalty shot in a soccer game and the game is tied with no time left, you are controlling your team’s destiny as well as yours. If you make the penalty shot your team wins and if you miss you have the possibility of losing. This is when you have your fate completely in your hands. I also believe that in some situations it is impossible to control your fate. For example if you are walking on the street and all of a sudden you see a car coming around the corner and hits you, the fate wasn’t in your hands. There was absolutely nothing you could do about the situation and no way to control your fate. So all in all I believe it is partially a lie and partially true. I think people believe the world’s greatest lie in order to look forward for something in times of trouble. For example, if a player loses the game he could always believe the next game is in his fate to redeem himself.

In the book, the old man says how the world's greatest lie is that at a point in our lives, we lose control, and our lives are controlled by fate. I partially agree with this because fate does not account for everything we do. Fate can help lead us in a direction but it will never actually accomplish the goal without work. We have to work hard at our goals if we want to be successful. People believe in this lie for many reasons. One is that are lazy, they start to lose their thrive to accomplish this dream they had, so they settle for something they are guaranteed. People believe this because they need something to help them feel like they did all they can do and not feel lazy, when in fact that is what they are. Fate is something that helps people accomplishes what they were made to do, not something that requires no work to accomplish.

I believe that every one can cantrol there actions therefore can conrol the outcome of the majority of the situations. When a situation pops a person does not sit back and say I will let my destiny work this one out, one must take action and responsobility for what they are doing and after don't have regrets. I believe that people believe in this because when no body likes to do anything wrong in like and when something bad happens they dont want to blam them selves so they look for something else to put it on and thats usually their destiny.
