A theme that is expressed in Romeo and Juliet is The Individual Versus the Society. For example in Rome and Juliet Romeo was banished from Verona which meant he could not see Juliet anymore in Verona. The Prince said "And for that offence immediately we do exile him hence".
Romeo and Juliet must rebel against their heritages in order to see each other and to remain together. Juliet's father was trying to make her marry someone even though she was already married. During the renaissance usually the father was the head of the family and what he says go’s. This lead to lord Capulet screaming to Juliet that if she does not marry Paris he will “And you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets”. This conflict became a major point that influenced the ending to Romeo and Juliet. If lord Capulet did not try to make Juliet marry Paris then both Romeo and Juliet would still be alive.
One of the many themes expressed in Romeo and Juliet is True Love. True love is a main theme throughout the book. For instance when Romeo and Juliet first meet at the Capulet's party they instantly fall in love. Romeo forgets about his first love Rosaline and believes that he is meant to be with Juliet. Romeo risks his life to be with her.
“JULIET
If they do see thee, they will murder thee.
ROMEO
Alack, there lies more peril in thine eye
Than twenty of their swords: look thou but sweet,
And I am proof against their enmity.”
Romeo may seem foolish and impulsive but he would risk his life for his one true love, Juliet. Also at the end of the play when Romeo sees Juliet dead and he kills himself it shows how faithful he is to her and how he would give up his life to be with her. Also once Juliet wakes and Friar Lawrence tries to get her out of the tomb before the guards get there she refuses, because she wants to be with her love even if it means her death. When Juliet kills herself with Romeo she shows her willingness to die if she can’t be with her True Love.
I think that one of the overall themes of "Romeo and Juliet" would be to not be too impulsive with various situations that you may encounter. That it is necessary to think things through to prevent disaster from happening. This is clearly shown when Juliet states,
"Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed.
If that thy bent of love be honourable,
Thy purpose marriage, send me word to-morrow,
By one that I'll procure to come to thee..."
Juliet is acting very impulsivly here as she is 13 years old and is making the decision that her and Romeo will get married at such a young age, not thinking about the various consequences that could arise from this. Both are so caught up in the moment of being married and living together for the rest of their lives that they seem to forget which families they come from and that they belong to two different families that are great enemies of eachother. Both Romeo and Juliet do not consider the reprocutions their actions may have on their relationships with their families. So in conclusion I feel that one of the many themes would be to think things through, consider both the pros and the cons of a decision and doing that will ultimatly lead to to making the right choice and therefore prevent grave consequences that could arise from your actions.
In Romeo and Juliet, the two mains characters, Romeo and Juliet will do anything for love. This helps to develop a major theme of the story. The theme is that love can be so strong that it can force people to do almost anything. The play focuses on how far people can go for love. Romeo and Juliet defy their social lives in order to get married. Juliet lies to her family and marries Romeo without letting anyone know. Romeo also does not tell many people. They both know that their families dislike each other, but love forces them to disobey their parents and families. In the prologue of Act 2, it says, "But passion lends them, power, time means, to meet, Tempering extremities with extreme sweet." In the end of the story, when Romeo thinks that Juliet is dead he gets a poison and drinks it. When Juliet wakes up, she sees Romeo dead beside her. She then stabs herself. Both characters believe they cant live without each other because they are so in love. They would rather take their own lives away, then live without one another. This proves that love can control a persons life.
One of the most important themes that is constantly represented in Romeo and Juliet has to be love. The pure passionate feeling of love. The first time that the readers experience the love between the two characters was when they locked eyes during the Capulet party. "O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiopia’s ear; Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear! So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows, As yonder lady o'er her fellows shows. The measure done, I'll watch her place of stand, And, touching hers, make blessed my rude hand. Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night." This is the reaction that Romeo had once catching a glimpse of Juliet’s beauty. After this excerpt, Romeo builds the courage to go and profess his love to Juliet. Another cute moment that the two lovers exchange their love for each other was the meeting in Capulet's Orchard. "O, wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied? What satisfaction canst thou have to-night? The exchange of thy love's faithful vow for mine. I gave thee mine before thou didst request it: And yet I would it were to give again. Wouldst thou withdraw it? for what purpose, love?" The meeting of the two really sparked up their relationship, and made them feel all the better. They were in love, true love, love so strong that only death could end it.
Through out the piece of literature called “Romeo and Juliet”, there had been many themes expressed in the novel. I believe that a good theme for this book is a combination of hastiness and love. This is supported in the novel because when Romeo sees Juliet he thinks it is love at first sight. “So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows,
as yonder lady o'er her fellows shows. The measure done, I'll watch her place of stand,
and, touching hers, make blessed my rude hand. Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.” This shows the theme of true love and how this gets Romeo and Juliet killed. The theme of precipitate also is portrayed superior in this literature when Juliet says “Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed.
If that thy bent of love be honorable, Thy purpose marriage, send me word to-morrow,
By one that I'll procure to come to thee, Where and what time thou wilt perform the rite;
And all my fortunes at thy foot I'll lay And follow thee my lord throughout the world. Both of these themes reveal the Romeo and Juliet’s character flaw, making fast decisions and falling in love with an alleged enemy.
There are many themes in Romeo and Juliet, but one of the main themes is love at first sight. At the Capulets party Romeo sees Juliet and falls in love, then Juliet sees him and falls back in love. They met in secret at the party, and the afterward on Juliet's balcany. Romeo is willing to risk his life for her and doesn't care that she is a Capulet and he is a Montegue.
ROMEO: "I have night's cloak to hide me from their sight; And but thou love me, let them find me here:My life were better ended by their hate,Than death prorogued, wanting of thy love."
(Act 2, Scene 2)
Romeo is aware that if he gets caught talking to Juliet that he will be murdered but he still chooses to stay. He says that he would rather die then live without her love.
One theme that could be found in "Romeo and Juliet" is do not be impulsive with things. This helps to prevent situations from happening that could hurt you. Romeo and Juliet are very impulsive as you can see because they decide the night they meet that they will get married the next day. This is stated in the text when Romeo and Juliet meet in the orchard.
JULIET
“Thy purpose marriage, send me word to-morrow,
By one that I'll procure to come to thee,
Where and what time thou wilt perform the rite;
And all my fortunes at thy foot I'll lay
And follow thee my lord throughout the world.”
ROMEO
“Let me stand here till thou remember it
And I'll still stay, to have thee still forget,
forgetting any other home but this.”
This shows their impulsiveness because Juliet is only 13 and she wants to be married to a guy she met a few hours ago. Their impulsiveness leads to the consequence of both of them dying because they forget that they’re families are enemies. They don’t think about that when they are having such a good time talking about getting married. The scene in the orchard shows their tragic flaw, when they rush things. They are living for today and not thinking about the future. I feel that if they took things slow and didn’t try to make this all happen in one night, things would have turned out okay and I don’t think either of them would have been killed. Even though the families were enemies with each other, I feel their could have been a solution to resolve the feuding families. All in all, their tragic flaw of impulsiveness cost them their lives, when all they had to do was just plan ahead and wait for things to come to them.
There are many themes that are expressed in the tragedy Romeo and Juliet. Two of the most prevalent themes in the play were the themes of love and impulsiveness. Throughout the entire play, both Romeo and Juliet show the great extent of their love for each other, and how both of them are extremely impulsive, and both of these things, lead to the downfall of the two main characters.
In the end of the play, Romeo learns of his true loves "death", when he is told of this, he immediately runs off to see if the news is true, when he gets to the tomb where she lies, he sees her, and even though he realizes that she doesn't look dead, he drinks poison and kills himself. if Rome wasn't so impulsive, and didn't rush off, then he would have gotten the letter, and Romeo and Juliet would still be alive.
The other major theme in the play is true love, throughout the entire play, both of the main characters say how they love each other so much that they would rather die, than not be together, and this actually becomes reality in the end, but they would both be alive if they weren't so impulsive.
There was two themes that caused both Romeo and Juliet to die at the end of the play. The themes were love and violence. The first time Romeo and Juliet ever saw each other they loved each other. For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night." From this moment on, they knew they would be with each other forever. Although they realized that one was a Capulet and the other as a Montague they could not help themselves from loving one another. They knew that the only way for their love to work was if they date d behind their parents and friends' back. Unfortunately violence was another theme in Romeo and Juliet and this famous Shakesphere tragedy ended with both the star-crossed lovers taking their own life. When Juliet was "dead" Romeo actually thought she was, so he decided to kill himself because of his tragic flaw, impulsiveness. When Juliet wakes up from her 42 hour sleep she finds that Romeo has killed herself and therefore she does the same and they are both in the Capulet burial place, dead. It was an unfortunate ending to a great Shakesphere play.
The theme of the play, Romeo and Juliet, is love, and love can make you reach for things way beyond your imagination. The prologue of act 2 proves this theme. It shows Romeo's tragic flaw, impulsiveness, and it shows how far the couple will go to reach each other.
"Being held a foe, he may not have access
To breathe such vows as lovers use to swear;
And she as much in love, her means much less
To meet her new-beloved any where:
But passion lends them power, time means, to meet
Tempering extremities with extreme sweet."
Juliet pretends to be dead, by taking a potion that filters her blood, so she can soon spend the rest of her life with her beloved husband. Bathesar, being Romeo's servant, sees the "funeral" and tells his master. Romeo then goes to the tomb, where he finds Juliet, not yet awakened, and kills himself. Then Juliet, waking to Romeo on the ground, dead, kills her own self because she had lost the love of her life.
Overall I think the main theme in Romeo and Juliet is basically love. Without love, there would be no reason for any of the events which had to do with Romeo and Juliet to take place. The storyline starts to get exciting after Romeo meets Juliet at the party, and from that point on they want to stay together. It’s true love which really makes them want to see each other, not caring whether they get caught by their families. A quote which really showed the emotions between the two lovers was “O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.” It showed Romeo was so in love with Juliet, that when she died he could not bear to live without her, and therefore took the poison and killed himself. It’s a true tragedy to find out that Juliet did not die, and wakes up to find her beloved Romeo actually dead next to her. Again it shows a powerful and loving bond between the two, as Juliet thinks the same as Romeo, and ends up killing herself along with him.
In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, illustrates many different themes. One theme that I saw at the end of the play was miscommunication. Someone in class brought this theme up when Romeo did not get the message about Juliet drinking the potion and how she was not really dead. Friar John is responsible for sending the message to Romeo in Mantua.
“But I will write again to Mantua, and keep her at my cell till Romeo come.”
This reveals the theme of miscommunication because he could not deliver the message. Friar John also says
“I could not send it,--here it is again,-- Nor get a messenger to bring it thee.”
Because of miscommunication, Romeo believes that his love, his purpose for life is dead before his eyes.
Romeo cried “O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.”
Romeo kills himself to be with Juliet in heaven. This scene is also an example of dramatic irony, because we the reader know, that Juliet is alive, and now Romeo is dead.
Within the Tragedy Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare there has been many themes expressed to the Audience. One theme is love at first site or making rash life-changing decisions. When Romeo and Juliet first see one another, and not even speak to each other they think they have fallen in love. Romeo and Juliet are way ahead of themselves. Romeo says to himself, "Did my heart love til now?" Romeo quickly decides that he is in love with Juliet even though he has not yet spoken to her. Juliet however starts out not as impulsive as Romeo. Also Romeo and Juliet get married the next day, which is very fast. These quick decisions that the two main characters make in this Tragedy has a significant impact on the finale of the play. There are many questions you ask yourself but no one will ever no the answers to them. What would have happened if Romeo and Juliet took it slower? Or what if Romeo drank the poison a few minutes longer? These questions relate to the theme of impulsiveness. Although their decisions were rash their love was still faithful to each other. “For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”
A theme in Romeo and Juliet is forbidden love. Forbidden love is shown all throughout the play. Romeo is a Montague which is the total opposite of what Juliet is. It is a bit ironic that Romeo falls in love with Juliet because she is a Capulet, and out of all the women that he is not forbidden to be friendly with, he falls in love with Juliet Capulet. The same goes for Juliet. Juliet's father arranges a marriage between Juliet and Paris, but she falls in love with Romeo. Right away you knew if wasn't going to end very well. The same night they met each other, they had plans to get married. Both characters biggest flaw was them making rash decisions and being impulsive. These two things might have very well been what truly killed them in the end. Romeo was very impulsive once he got the news that Juliet had died. He rushed to the city to get a deadly potion to kill himself. If he had wanted to find out all of the details he probably would have found out Juliet was not really dead. In the end both families realized their love was true, but it was already too late.
William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, is a play based primarily on passionate love between two individuals destined for one another. Initially, their relationship is based on love at first sight and in turn overrides any previous loyalties to family members and friends established in the past. Romeo says to himself, "Did my heart love til now?" which is a statment that proves Romeos rash descision of love at first sight. Although their families are sworn enemies, the two lovers refuse to live without one another, acting against all family restrictions by continuously visiting the other. Romeo and Juliet are young and care for each other, and their love comes to a tragic end due to their own rash actions. They die thinking that they have accomplished something good (love) when in reality all they caused was sadness and regret to others. Although their love was forbidden rival families, Romeo and Juliet figured if they were not allowed to be together in the present life, they could at least be together in the afterlife. Finally, after an uphill struggle, Romeo and Juliet decided to part from this life, moving onto the next, where their love is endless.
The main theme of Romeo and Julieet is that the two characters will do anything to be with each other in life or after life. Through out the story the two characters are always telling each other how if they could not be with one another the other would have no other reason to live and just die. Although all this was a little bit of foreshadowing, in the end of the novel Juliet comes up with the plan after Romeo in vanished from the town. she would drink the potion that would make her look dead for 2 days and when she awoke in the tomb, Romeo would be waiting for her so they could run away together. Although Romeo did not recieve this message so when he went to see his love of his life dead, all the things he said to Juliet about he'd die with out her came true. He drank posion that killed him instatly and when Juliet awoke she was so sad to see him dead she stabed herself with a knife to fallow her husband in to the after life. ( Act 5, scene 3)
The theme of the story is think before you act. Romeo never thought before he acted and acted way too impulsively, causing him to take his own life. Juliet also doesn't think before she acts, for the simple fact that she decides to marry Romeo on an impulsive act, while she is not emotionally stable. Which also led to the death of herself. They were both very impulsive on the way they acted towards each other. They both died in the end because they thought they were doing the right thing. They both didn't stop to think about other choices they could have taken. Also Friar Lawrence takes a big part in this situation because he doesnt seek for romeo himself, and make sure he gets the letter, he could have also showed them both a different way out of their situation. Romeo and Juliet could have found another way out of their circumstance without having Juliet pretend to be dead, which lead to the confusion of Romeo. Then, Romeo kileed himself, causing Juliaet to then take her own life to be with her beloved.
Two themes i found in Romeo and Juliet are miscommunication and revenge. Miscommunication is found in Romeo and Juliet many different times. It is in it when The servent that cannot read was told by Lord capulet to invite a list of people to a party. Not knowing who Romeo was he asked him to help read the names off the list and when Romeo was telling the servent the names he realized that it was lord capulets party and him and his friends went to crash it. That was miscommunication because The servent didnt know how to read so he couldnt give the information to the people. Another time there is miscommunication is when Friar Lorence sent someone to give Romeo a letter that says Juliet is not really dead and to come to the tomb where Tybalt is to come see her when she wakes up. When Romeo didnt get the note he thought that Juliet had really died so he goes to the tomb to see for himelf and it turns out that the way she looked he thought that she was dead. So he touched and kissed her for the last time and killed himself and when she woke up she saw him dead and ended up killing herself. Revenge is also a Theme in Romeo and Juliet. When Romeo comes to the Capulets ball Tybalt automatically wants revenge. When Tybalt is looking for Romeo Mercutio starts to fight him becasue he knoes that Tybalt could kill Romeo so Mercutio fights him and Mercutio dies. To get revenge Romeo is extremely upset and duels against Tybalt and ends up kiliing him. Revenge is through out the entire book just by the fact that The Montegues and The Capulets have always been in a fight so they are always wanting revenge against one another.
The story “Romeo and Juliet” has many different types of themes. One theme that is portrayed throughout the entire story impulsiveness. One example of impulsiveness in Romeo and Juliet would be when they decided to get married on the first night they met.
Romeo: O blessed, blessed night! I am afeard. Being in night, all this is but a dream, too flattering-sweet to be substantial.
Juliet: Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed. If that thy bent of love be honorable, thy purpose marriage, send me word to-morrow, by one that I'll procure to come to thee, where and what time thou wilt perform the rite; and all my fortunes at thy foot I'll lay and follow thee my lord throughout the world.
Another example of impulsiveness would be when Romeo finds out Juliet is dead from Balthasar. He decides o go see for himself with out consulting with Friar Laurence first.
Romeo: News from Verona!--How now, Balthasar! Dost thou not bring me letters from the friar? How doth my lady? Is my father well? How fares my Juliet? that I ask again; for nothing can be ill, if she be well.
Balthasar: Then she is well, and nothing can be ill: her body sleeps in Capel's monument, and her immortal part with angels lives.I saw her laid low in her kindred's vault, and presently took post to tell it you: O, pardon me for bringing these ill news, since you did leave it for my office, sir.
Romeo: Is it even so? then I defy you, stars! Thou know'st my lodging: get me ink and paper, and hire post-horses; I will hence to-night.
